While You Wait on Campus Credentials
Your NC State Employee Identifying Credentials are an essential component to system access and recognition as an active employee for various steps in the Onboarding process. These Credentials are known as your Unity ID and the associated Employee ID number. The most critical of these is the Unity ID.
The creation of your Unity ID is a result of a hire action initiated by your department in our HR System. Unfortunately, this process may be delayed for a variety of reasons resulting in a delay in your credentials and access to many campus systems.
How will you know when your campus credentials are finalized?
- You will receive an email from onboardingcenter@ncsu.edu with your Unity ID and instructions on how to set up your password and schedule an appointment with the Onboarding Center.
What CAN be Done Without Campus Credentials?
- Begin working
- Complete I-9 at the I-9 Center or Onboarding Center. Review the list of required documents to complete the I-9.
- Get a temporary parking permit-Take copy of your offer letter to Transportation
- Review benefits and retirement options
- Review New Employee Orientation and Benefits Orientation schedules and decide on the dates that will work best for you.
- Review Employee Resources
- Review Campus Points of Interest

Prior State Service
Prior State Service is defined as:
- The previous employment was with an applicable state employer AND
- The previous position was one in which contributions were made to the State Retirement System (TSERS) or the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP).
If you meet these conditions, click the button below to find resources.
Foreign Nationals
Foreign Nationals will need to review the International Taxation page and make an appointment for a tax assessment before you can be paid.
Social Security Number Updates
Payroll, E-Verify, and benefits enrollment are all impacted by missing or incorrect social security numbers.
Are you a foreign national who received your social security number after you began working? If so, start with step 1a below and then skip to step 2. Review these guidelines for applying for a social security card if you have not yet done so.
If you are a US citizen and your SSN is incorrect or missing from the HR System, start with step 1b below and then move to step 2.
- Step 1a (foreign nationals): Once you have received your SSN, contact International Compensation & Taxation (ICT) at ictquestions@ncsu.edu to update your SSN in the HR system. ICT will guide you through the process to upload your Social Security Card for accurate information update. DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR SSN IN YOUR EMAIL. Once the SSN has been updated in the HR System, you will receive an email with the subject “Need Your Confirmation of Amended I-9 Form with NC State University” from perfectcompliance.com with a link to the amendment and you should follow the instructions to approve and sign the amendment. Questions related to the I-9 can be directed to: i9questions@ncsu.edu or 919-515-2135.
- Step 1b (US citizen): Reach out to the Payroll office at hrpayroll@ncsu.edu to obtain a secure link to update your SSN. Questions can be directed to Payroll: 919-515-4350.
- Step 2: Employees in benefits-eligible positions will not be able to enroll in the Mandatory Retirement Plans, State Health Plan (SHP) or NCFlex plans (housed in the benefits enrollment portal) accessible via MyPack until your SSN is updated in the HR System. If your 30-day new hire benefits enrollment period has passed once your SSN is entered, contact UHR Benefits for assistance. You will not have access to the enrollment portals without an SSN updated in the NC State systems.
New Hire Checklist
To access the checklist, follow the New Hire Checklist link and log in using your Unity ID and password. Your Unity ID and links with instructions to set-up a password will be sent to you by email before your first day of employment. If you haven’t received this information by then, please contact the staff in the Onboarding Center at onboardingcenter@ncsu.edu or by phone at (919) 513-1278. If you are not a new employee, you can view a Sample Checklist for an idea of the items included.
University Orientations
As a new employee at NC State, you are required to attend New Employee Orientation (NEO100) and Benefits Orientation (BEN100/NEO201) within your first 30 days of employment. These programs will help acclimate you to the university and ensure you get off to a great start. An Onboarding Specialist will register you for these orientations during your Onboarding appointment.
New Employee Orientation (NEO100)
NEO covers several topics that the university has deemed critical for permanent employees to receive. Topics include environmental health & safety, harassment prevention, and university police services. We also make sure you learn about some of the fun stuff of being a member of the pack, like where to get our very own Howling Cow ice cream, gym memberships, technology lending programs, and more. All new hires are required to complete this session.
All Faculty will be invited to participate in an additional New Faculty Orientation hosted by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost’s Office for Faculty Excellence held each Fall.
Benefits Orientation (Faculty and Staff-BEN100)
If you are a faculty or staff member (EHRA Faculty, EHRA Non-Faculty or SHRA Staff), you have two options for completing Benefits Orientation:
- Instructor-lead session (BEN100)–The instructor-lead session runs three and a half hours and is offered every few weeks. You can choose to do this session in-person or via Zoom. A Benefits Consultant will facilitate the class and be available for questions.
- Self-Guided Online Orientation. If you choose the self-guided online option, you can register for the self-guided orientation via Reporter and follow the links. Once done reviewing the orientation information, please indicate the session as “Complete” in Reporter.
Postdoc Benefits Orientation (NEO201)
Postdocs participate in a separate and specific Postdoc Benefits Orientation that includes information from the Postdoctoral Affairs Office about the support and services available to Postdocs.
