What is the Difference Between Onboarding and New Employee Orientation?

Onboarding appointments are typically one-on-one appointments between the employee and an Onboarding Specialist to complete important tasks on the first day of work, such as getting an ID card, requesting parking, and setting up Direct Deposit.
New Employee Orientation (NEO) is the University’s Orientation required for all permanent employees (SHRA/EPS/EHRA/Faculty/SAAO/Postdocs) with an FTE of 0.5 or greater. NEO covers topics the University Administration has determined as critical for permanent employees to begin a successful career with NC State.
The Onboarding appointment is a 45-60 minute appointment for permanent employees on their first day of work, or a 30-45 minute appointment for temporary employees on their first day, where we cover the following:
- I-9 Completion
- 2-Factor Authentication Enrollment
- Issuing a Campus One Card
- Request a parking pass
- Complete tax withholding
- Complete direct deposit
- W-2 Consent
- Emergency contacts
- Emergency alerts
- New Employee Orientation enrollment (REQUIRED in first 30 day for permanent employees)
- Benefits Orientation enrollment (REQUIRED in first 30 day for permanent employees)
- Discuss International Tax assessment reminders (if applicable)
- Discuss Secondary Employment (if applicable)
- Discuss Conflict of Interest (if applicable)
- Discuss Patent Agreement (if applicable)
- Assist with any incomplete checklist items
Employees will be enrolled for the next available New Employee Orientation during their Onboarding appointment. Permanent employees are required to complete New Employee Orientation in their first 30 days.
