Understanding I-9s
Form I-9, officially the "Employment Eligibility Verification," is a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) form used by employers in the U.S. to verify the identity and employment authorization of new hires. It is required by federal law and must be completed for every individual hired for employment in the United States, regardless of their citizenship status.
Employees must complete Section 1 of the I-9 form on or before their first day of work. A licensed I-9 user must complete Section 2 of the I-9 form with an employee within three business days after the employee’s start date. A start date is the day that an employee actually begins to work and perform services for the university.
Every new hire and some rehires are required to complete an I-9 form to prove identity and eligibility to legally work in the United States.
Any nonimmigrant foreign national employee whose work authorization is updated, extended, amended or changed must also complete a new I-9 form when any of those changes happen.
Student hires who are paid employees of NC State are also required to complete the I-9 process.
REVIEW THE LIST OF ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTS FOR SECTION 2 OF THE I-9 FORM.
NC State cannot accept expired documents, including expired U.S. passports or passport cards, as a part of the I-9 process. Copies, scans or photos of documents are not accepted as valid documents for Section 2. Employees must present original and unexpired documents when they meet with an authorized representative to complete Section 2 of the I-9 form.
