Candidate Guide for University Employment Considerations

Questions to Ask the Hiring Manager

Permanent employees are paid on a MONTHLY basis. The pay day is on the last business day of each month.

Temporary employees are paid on a biweekly schedule.

All employees are paid through Direct Deposit ONLY.

It is more common than not that employees have to pay for parking on campus (review “annual/non-expiring permits” section for payroll deduction options). There are a few exceptions for buildings located off campus, such as the farms. However, the rates vary and there are more cost effective alternative options to consider.

Talk with the hiring manager about recommended parking locations in relation to your primary building so you can determine the best option(s) for you.

Have conversations with the hiring manager to discuss how the position is identified based on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), if it requires clocking in/out and if it is eligible for overtime.

FLSA Non-Exempt employees are required to clock-in/out. If an employee physically works more than 40 hours in a workweek then “Comp Time” (or time and one-half leave hours) is applied.

FLSA Exempt employees do not clock in/out and are not eligible for “Comp Time”.

Health coverage begins the first day of the month after your hire date.*

Example: If your date of hire is June 5th, health coverage begins July 1st.

*You can choose to delay coverage for one month if needed. Example: If your date of hire is June 5th, you can choose to have your health coverage begin August 1.

There is also a 6% payroll deduction for either of the Mandatory Retirement plans effective in your first paycheck.

Campus is a 24/7 operation. You may be required to report to work or respond via some other method under adverse or emergency conditions for the University. The position is officially designated by the University based on the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The hiring manager can expound on the expectations based on the circumstances.

EHRA:
Exempt from the Human Resources Act

SHRA:
Subject to the Human Resources Act
